How to Use Stripe, PayPal & Square Fee Calculator (UK & US)
- Select your currency/region (UK £ GBP or US $ USD) and enter the transaction amount.
- See both the Net Payout (if you charge that amount) AND the Reverse Invoice Amount (exact amount you must bill so you receive your full target after fees).
- Compare Stripe Standard (UK Domestic, UK Commercial/International, US), PayPal Business, Square, and SumUp side by side.
How to Calculate Stripe & PayPal Fees (Including the Reverse Invoice Formula)
A common mistake freelancers and agencies make when passing card processing fees on to a client is simply adding 1.5% + 20p to the invoice. Because payment processors charge their percentage on the new total (including the fee you just added), simply adding the fee leaves you out of pocket!
The Exact Reverse Fee Mathematical Formula
To receive an exact net target amount N after a fixed fee F and percentage rate r, the gross invoice amount G must be calculated as:
Gross Invoice = (Target Net + Fixed Fee) ÷ (1 − Percentage Rate)
For example, to net exactly £1,000.00 on a standard UK consumer card via Stripe (1.5% + £0.20):
(£1000 + £0.20) ÷ (1 − 0.015) = £1,000.20 ÷ 0.985 = £1,015.43.
| Processor / Plan | Standard Rate | Fixed Fee | Net on £1,000 Charge | Charge Needed to Net £1,000 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stripe UK (Standard Consumer Card) | 1.5% | £0.20 | £984.80 | £1,015.43 |
| Stripe UK (Commercial / Premium Card) | 1.9% | £0.20 | £980.80 | £1,019.57 |
| Stripe UK (EEA / International Card) | 2.5% – 3.25% | £0.20 | £974.80 | £1,025.85 |
| PayPal UK (Standard Commercial) | 2.9% | £0.30 | £970.70 | £1,030.18 |
| Square UK (Online) | 1.4% – 2.5% | £0.25 | £985.75 | £1,014.45 |
| Stripe US (Standard Card) | 2.9% | $0.30 | $970.70 | $1,030.18 |
